Description

Custard-apple family (Annonaceae)

The only hardy member of a tropical genus of plants, the Annonaceae or Custard Apples, this small tree provides a tropical look in the landscape. Bell-shaped maroon-colored flowers give rise to a large, edible, greenish-yellow fruit with a taste somewhere between banana and melon, and a texture of custard pudding. Grown in full sun, it tends to develop into a single-stemmed tree. In the forest understory, it tends to sucker and form a colony – a small enchanted Pawpaw forest if you will. Don’t allow grafted varieties to sucker – it takes away from fruit production by the grafted variety.
