Description

Willow family (Salicaceae)

Willows are not the most showy of native plants – their value resides more in their importance for wildlife, from early Spring nectar and pollen sources for native bees to the wide variety of animals that consume their foliage. Bayberry Willow is an exception – it’s one of the more showy species, with a very glaucous underside of the leaf (and giving rise to another common name, Blueleaf Willow), reddish-tinged stems and substantial, wide leaves.  Bayberry Willow may be a hybrid between S. eriocephala and S. sericea.
