Allium stellatum – Prairie Onion – 1-Quart

This species is quite similar to Nodding Wild Onion (A. cernuum), but is found primarily west of the Mississippi, especially in the Northern Plains and Central Prairies. It has much narrower foliage, tends to bloom a little later (hence an alternative name, Autumn Onion), and the flowering stalk tends to be straight at the apex, not nodding – at least once the flowers have opened. The flowers tend to be more star-like than the bell-shaped flowers of A. cernuum – a better diagnostic is the placement of the anthers: strongly exerted in A. cernuum; somewhat protruding above the perianth in A. stellatum. It also tolerates drier conditions and is a good choice for a xeriscape. Deer-resistant.
