Amelanchier alnifolia First Editions® Standing Ovation™ – Saskatoon – 3-Gallon

$44.00

Also known as Western Serviceberry or Western Juneberry, reflecting it’s range from Minnesota to Alaska south to Northern California and New Mexico. It’s often considered one of the best tasting of the juneberries and is grown commercially in Canada. The fruit are “juicy and sweet, with the richness of sweet cherry along with a hint of almond” (Lee Reich). It flowers earlier than our Eastern species and the fruit ripens earlier as well, which may help keep birds away, though, to be safe, netting may be needed. Spreads slowly by stolons to form a fruiting hedge. Avoid planting near junipers, which are intermediate hosts for rust diseases that attack serviceberries.

From Bailey Nurseries:

Its upright, perfectly oval form adds height in small gardens, and provides nice structure during winter. Standing Ovation™ is a good alternative to columnar buckthorn. The uniform habit makes it great for hedging. From Valk Plants in the Netherlands.
