Yes, a rose that loves wet conditions! Otherwise it’s similar to other native roses with single fragrant flowers in various shades of pink followed by rose hips that are eagerly eaten by a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. The flowers provide pollen for bumblebees and other native bees, but no nectar. Unusually, the flattened disk of styles in the center of each flower is often pink or orange-red, rather than yellow. The purplish red bark and abundant scarlet rose hips are showy in winter after a snowfall. Despite the name, this shrub does not need a swamp to grow in – as long as the soil is consistently moist it will be happy.
