Diospyros virginiana – American Persimmon

Price range: $13.00 through $105.00

A tough tree, happiest in rich, moist soils, but adaptable to dry soils. A member of the Ebony family, with dark green 2-6” long leaves and blocky, charcoal-checkered bark. Small, fragrant white flowers are followed by 1 1/2” diameter pale orange fruit on female trees. A male tree is needed for pollination. The fruits are edible but are relished by wildlife so you have to beat the critters to them. Primarily a southern tree, it ranges up through New Jersey and even makes it into some of the counties of southern New York like Dutchess as well as Long Island, though it is considered a threatened species in New York State. Fall foliage color, shown here, is often yellow, but can range into the oranges and reds. A host plant for the luna moth (Actias luna), a giant silk moth with 3-4” light green wings.
