Viburnum prunifolium ‘Summer Magic’ – Blackhaw Viburnum

We find the name of this variety a bit odd because it’s most outstanding feature is the spectacular display of red and yellow foliage in the fall. New growth in the spring is reddish tinged, changing to pink and maturing to a leathery mauve green. ‘Summer Magic’ is a bit more compact than the species due to the fact that it does not exhibit the horizontal fish-bone branching of the species. Otherwise it has the same great attributes as the species – a tough small tree/large shrub with creamy white flowers and blue-black edible fruit that are also a favorite of birds.
