Panicum virgatum ‘Prairie Dog’- Switchgrass

This selection by Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin has long been a favorite of homeowners and landscape designers. It’s a strongly upright form with wide leaf blades a beautiful blue-green color. ‘Northwind’ was chosen as Perennial Plant of the Year© by the Perennial Plant Association in 2004 – it was only the third grass to receive this prestigious award. Somewhat surprisingly, the variety has gotten harder and harder to come by. Newer varieties like ‘Thundercloud’ and ‘Blue Fountain’ have largely superseded it. We still think it’s one of the best varieties though and we’re always looking to get our hands on some. Enjoy!
