Imagine the rich blue pea-like flowers of Blue Wild Indigo (B. australis) overlaid with the characteristic charcoal stems and gray-green foliage of Thickpod White Wild Indigo (B. alba) and you have ‘Purple Smoke’! A chance hybrid discovered by Rob Gardener of the North Carolina Botanical Gardens, the flowers are an attractive smokey violet color with a purple eye. Mature plants of 3-4 years can bear over 50 blooming stalks – truly spectacular!
