Eupatorium subvenosum – Pine Barrens Thoroughwort – 1-Pint

This Joe Pye weed relative is virtually unknown in horticulture  – no one else on planet Earth seems to be growing it! We think it should be more widely planted! Its attractiveness is subtle – it stays a nice compact size through the growing season then in late summer develops clusters of fluffy white inflorescences that lack ray flowers (these are the flowers in a typical composite inflorescence that give them a “daisy-like” appearance). The inflorescences last for a long time and are set off by foliage that increasingly takes on a reddish cast as summer wanes, as do the stems of the plant. It has a limited range with a stronghold in the New Jersey Pine Barrens – it’s  threatened in New York, occurring only on Long Island and Staten Island. Long thought to be a variety of White Thoroughwort (E. album) it’s now considered to be a hybrid of E. hyssopifolium × petaloideum. Provide well-drained soil.
