Description

Aster family (Asteraceae)

One of the most common plants in our forests and woodland edges, though, of course, mostly unnoticed until it bursts into flower in late Summer, with a fairly lengthy bloom season that extends well into October. The plant also looks good before flowering with blemish free foliage on dark, wiry stems. White Wood Aster is an aggressive self-sower and also spreads fairly aggressively by underground stolons. So be careful with its use near more delicate woodland plants lest they be overwhelmed. On the other hand its aggressive nature makes it a very good choice as a taller ground cover and stabilizer of slopes in shaded areas. Drought tolerant and a good choice for dry, shady areas.
