Gymnocladus dioicus – Kentucky Coffee Tree – 5-Gallon

An uncommon inhabitant of river bottoms from New York to South Dakota southward. This is a unique and beautiful tree although it is ungainly in youth, remaining almost devoid of branching until it reaches 2-3” in diameter. Once established it’s bothered little by heat, cold, road salt, insects, disease or drought. The compound leaves are huge, often reaching 3’ in length and giving the tree a ferny demeanor. Seeds from female trees may be roasted as a coffee substitute – they are toxic when raw.
