Helianthus decapetalus – Thinleaf Sunflower – 2-Gallon

In our area there are 3 species of perennial sunflower that grow in woodland openings or along roadsides through forested land – none are denizens of deep shady woods, despite the oft-used common name of Woodland Sunflower. All can take considerably amount of sun if the soil isn’t too dry. This species is difficult to distinguish from Paleleaf Sunflower – it has thinner, coarsely toothed leaves, sparsely pubescent beneath. The flowers are very attractive to bumblebees and other native pollinators, and the seeds are taken by many species of birds. Like many perennial sunflowers it sends out rhizomes that can cover a lot of ground quickly. It’s best reserved for the wild garden – in a perennial border it will overwhelm most of its neighbors.
