Juncus effusus – Soft Rush – 3-Quart

There are a number of varieties of this plant with corkscrew-shaped stems like ‘Spiralis,’ ‘Big Twister’ and ‘Unicorn’ – we’ve never found any of them to be particularly cold-hardy, though ‘Big Twister’ seems to be the best of the lot. In contrast, the straight species offered here is rock solid cold hardy and a ubiquitous plant in wet meadows, swamps, and the edges of wetlands in our area and over most of North America. Even without any tendency to corkscrew, this rush provides an interesting architectural element in gardens with its stiffly upright stems that will fan out a little over time.

Water Depth – Up to 4”, though it does best if the water level drops in Summer to just wet soil
