Juniperus virginiana – Eastern Red-cedar

$10.00$135.00

An old-field colonizing species that tends to disappear as larger forest trees grow up around it. A valuable tree for wildlife, the waxy seed cones  look like a berry and are attractive to a wide variety of birds, in particular the Cedar Waxwing. Individual trees are either male or female so if you want to feed birds plant a number of trees or a selected female cultivar like ‘Arboretum’. Birds will also nest amidst the dense foliage; we often found a Robin’s nest in the pictured tree that used to be growing next to our nursery sign. The heartwood of this tree is quite rot resistant – all of the posts for various structures around the nursery are Red-cedar.
