Panicum virgatum ‘Blood Brothers’- Switchgrass

Price range: $8.00 through $13.00

A Canadian introduction, ‘Blood Brothers’ develops outstanding foliage color. It forms an upright, slightly vase-shaped mound of green-blue leaves, the tips developing blood-red tones by midsummer that get better through the autumn. Sprays of small reddish flowers develop into tan seedheads by late fall. Remains sturdy and attractive well into winter. Great in a sunny border. Discovered by Canadian gardener Dale Smith as a sport of ‘Heavy Metal’ in her former garden near St. Thomas, Ontario. If we had to pick the best red switch grass, ‘Blood Brothers’ would have a slight edge on ‘Shenandoah,’ ‘Ruby Ribbons’ and ‘Red Flame.’

Description

Grass family (Poaceae)

A characteristic clump forming grass of midwestern tallgrass prairies that also occurs in New York. Effective either as a specimen or en masse. It produces airy panicles of pinkish to reddish flowers that mature to a silvery gray color. You can provide food for winter flocks of birds by planting grasses – just don’t cut them back until early spring.
