Hummingbird Temperennials

Ruby-throated hummingbirds spend the winter in the tropics, feeding from a variety of plants that are perennial in the tropics, but not cold-hardy in our region. Gardeners can use these “temperennial” plants to attract hummingbirds, treating them as they would annual plants or growing them in containers that are brought inside or into a greenhouse for the winter. The most attractive plants to hummingbirds are various members of the genus Salvia, mostly red-flowered species but also blue-flowered ones such as the popular Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue’. Members of the genus Agastache are also very attractive, as you can surmise from one of their common names – Hummingbird Mint!
