Ulmus americana ‘Jefferson’ – American Elm – 7-Gallon

$155.00

Along the National Mall in Washington D. C. there’s an elm, planted in the 1930s, that remains unscathed by Dutch elm disease. It has been propagated by the National Park Service, which released it as ‘Jefferson’ in 2004. At first thought to be a hybrid with an Asian elm, subsequent research shows ‘Jefferson’ to be 100% American Elm. However, it’s smaller in stature than most American Elms, which can grow as high as 100’. ‘Jefferson’ is half that size, perhaps a little bigger. Deep green foliage emerges earlier in Spring and remains later in fall than other elms, before turning yellow.
