Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Ha Ha Tonka’ – Little Bluestem

Price range: $16.00 through $24.00

‘Ha Ha Tonka’ originated from seeds collected at Ha Ha Tonka State Park in south central Missouri. German horticulturists Cassian Schmidt and Piet Oudolf selected the variety over time from a seedling population, choosing plants with particularly pilose foliage – a distinctive look for a Little Bluestem – one that stands out with back-lit light throughout the year not just in flower.

Description

Grass family (Poaceae)

One of the most characteristic grasses of Tallgrass Prairies and common in old fields in theCatskills. Clump-forming and fine-textured with delicate inflorescences that become silvery and noticeably attractive when side-lit or back-lit by the Autumn or early Winter sun.  You can help seed-eating birds that overwinter in our area by waiting to trim grasses back to the ground until early to mid spring.
