Chelone glabra – White Turtlehead

$6.00$14.00

Of the three species of Turtlehead that we offer, this is the local native. It can be found growing in swampy spots – indeed we found it growing wild on this property when we moved here in a wet swale below what became our small lily pond. The white flowers often have pink tips, and, while not quite as ornamental as the pure pink flowered species, still provide some welcome color in the late Summer bog garden or along streamsides. White Turtlehead is one of only two host plants for the gorgeous Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton) – look for their distinctive caterpillars  – if you’re lucky enough to have them, plant more White Turtlehead to feed them! Also attracts bumblebees and even the occasional hummingbird!
