Itea virginica Fizzy Mizzy® – Virginia Sweetspire – 3-Gallon

Summer of ’23 we had the following Sweetspire cultivars out for sale near each other:

• Fizzy Mizzy®
• Fountains of Rouge™
• ‘Henry’s Garnet’
• Love Child®

All were in flower. Fizzy Mizzy® was a pretty clear cut favorite amongst the native bees that were out foraging. However, Fizzy Mizzy was quite late going dormant and we suspect it’s derived from southern populations. It was selected in Grand Haven, Michigan, though the origin of the parental plants was not provided in the patent application for the variety. We’ll see if the late dormancy causes overwintering dieback, though the winter of ’23-’24 was quite mild.

2024 – We did indeed have significant dieback on the ‘Fizzy Mizzy’ we overwintered. We will no longer offer this variety.
