Pinus rigida – Pitch Pine – 2-Gallon

Most people in our area know of the rare ecosystem that exists at Sam’s Point Preserve, Cragsmoor. It’s a ridgetop pine barrens where pitch pines grow into bonsai-like specimens due to shallow soils, limited rainfall and fire. Many visit our nursery in search of such specimens. However the trees at Sam’s Point are genetically full-sized – collect seeds from them and grow the seedlings under most conditions and they will be full size trees – you’ll have to prune them to get them to look like the pines at Sam’s Point. While our trees are not necessarily grown from Sam’s Point seeds they also will grow up into full size trees, as shown in the photo. Pitch pine can also be found growing in swampy lowlands – it’s a tough tree that shrugs off the worst conditions mother nature has to offer!
