Rudbeckia subtomentosa – Sweet Coneflower

Description

A tall species from moist midwestern prairies and bottomlands. The common name supposedly derives from a fleeting but sweet vanilla fragrance given off by crushed foliage and a light scent of anise from the flowers – while the foliage does indeed seem to be mildly fragrant, try as we might, we notice little scent  from this plant’s flowers. Even so, it’s still a wonderful and underused ornamental. Use toward the back of a flower border with rich soil or naturalize with other moisture lovers such as Cardinal Flower, Turtlehead, Joe-Pye Weed, Boneset, Boltonia, Queen of the Prairie and Bottle Gentian.
