Everyone knows Pussy Willow (S. discolor). There a number of other native willows, typically difficult to find in the trade other than at native plant nurseries, that are equally endearing and deserving of more use in home landscapes, for not only their ornamental value but for their value for wildlife as well. Sageleaf willow is one of these willows. And it’s attractive enough that is has made it into mainstream horticulture in the form of ‘Iceberg Alley’ – discovered in Canada, it has particularly pronounced silvery-green foliage and extreme cold-hardiness. Willows are dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants). ‘Iceberg Alley’ is a male plant providing pollen for early Spring pollinators. Our straight species plants are female and provide nectar for pollinators. Plant both and you’ll get seeds that songbirds dine on. Willow foliage feeds many of our butterflies. The shrubs’ dense form provides nesting spots for songbirds.
