Athyrium x ‘Ghost’ – Painted Lady Fern (Non-native)

A hybrid of Southern Lady Fern (A. filix-femina ssp. asplenioides) and Japanese Painted Fern (A. niponicum var. pictum) from the garden of Nancy Swell of Virginia. It combines the stature and vigor of Lady Fern with the silver gray and burgundy color of Japanese Painted Fern. A. x ‘Ghost’ is very upright in form and a very tight colonizer compared with another Lady Fern – Japanese Fern hybrid, A. x ‘Branford Beauty,’ which arches horizontally and has a looser clumping habit.
