Betula papyrifera Prairie Dream® – Paper Birch – 1.5-Pint

$15.00

Prairie Dream® was selected from a group of seedlings derived from the Killdeer Mountains of western North Dakota. It’s extremely cold hardy and so a great choice for the Catskills, but may not love being planted in warmer microclimates of the Hudson Valley. Since western North Dakota can also be dry, Prairie Dream® is very tolerant of drought in excessively drained soils – even so, it really grows its very best in soils with good, but not excessive moisture levels. Avoid waterlogged soils.

Description

Birch family (Betulaceae)

The white bark of many species of birch has long been prized for its ornamental value. Many of the species are of European or Asian origin and are highly susceptible to an insect pest called Bronze Birch Borer. Our native Paper Birch is resistant to this borer and is the best choice for planting in our area. Bark of young trunks is reddish brown – the bark will turn white over time as the trunk grows larger.
