Carex amphibola – Creek Sedge

Though common in eastern North America, this is a rare sedge in New York – it’s currently only found at a couple of locations in Dutchess County. While at first glance there is nothing remarkable about this sedge, it’s an attractive plant, resembling Liriope, a non-native grass-like plant that is often used in more southern locations as a ground cover and bank stabilizer. Creek Sedge is more of a clump-forming plant but can also be used for these purposes. Or plant it among woodland wildflowers – it’s adaptable to varying degrees of shade and just about any soil condition.
