Fragaria ×ananassa ‘Monterey’ – Organic Day-neutral Strawberry – 1-Quart

$6.00

A 2009 introduction from the University of California. It’s probably the best of the California varieties for backyard organic fruit growers because it has high resistance to most strawberry diseases. It occasionally gets a bit of powdery mildew, a disease that’s easy to control organically. It’s also considered one of the best-tasting California varieties with a distinct sweet aftertaste. ‘Monterey’ is the best day-neutral variety for average climatic conditions in our area. Our plants are certified organic.

Description

Garden strawberries originated under cultivation in Europe from crossings of the cultivated F. chiloensis forma chiloensis from South America and F. virginiana from North America. They are grown today on all continents and occasionally escape from gardens.

  • Strawberries require 6-10 hours a day of direct sunlight.
  • They will do best in a sandy loam soil and adding some aged manure and/or compost before planting is recommended.  Mulch with chopped straw, leaves or shredded wood.
  • The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 7.
  • Strawberries need well-drained conditions so raised beds or containers are a good option.
