Hypericum kalmianum v. erectum ‘Gemo’- Shrubby St. Johnswort

This tough, compact and adaptable shrub has bright yellow 1” flowers held in flattened cymes above bluish-green foliage. The flowers are attractive to bees and other beneficial insects. Each flower has five styles and a distinctive center boss of yellow stamens. Flowers give way to beaked, oval, brown seed capsules that mature in fall and often persist on the shrub until spring. Indigenous to cliffs, riversides and lakesides in the Great Lakes region. The species’ Latin name honors Peter Kalm, a student of Linnaeus, who discovered the plant in the mid-1700s. 

‘Gemo’ may or may not be a cultivar of H. kalmianum. We think there’s a good chance it’s a hybrid between H. kalmianum and another species of Hypericum.
