Lonicera caerulea – Boreal series of Haskap or Honeyberry – 1-Quart

Price range: $11.00 through $13.00

The University of Saskatchewan is the leading developer of this first-of-season fruit. Their newest varieties incorporate plants from the Kuril Islands, which stretch from the north of Japan to the Kamchatka peninsula of Russia – the Boreal series – ‘Beast’ – ‘Beauty’ – ‘Blizzard.’ They have larger fruits and are more productive than older varieties. Self-infertile – plant more than one variety in order to get berries. ‘Beast’ is the best pollenizer – always include it along with either ‘Beauty’ or ‘Blizzard’ in your planting – or plant all three! These are late bloomers – other late bloomers we often sell – ‘Blue Moon’ – ‘Blue Pacific’ – ‘Blue Velvet’ – can also be used as pollenizers.

Likes a moist – even a little boggy, cool location – mulch heavily and provide afternoon shade. Birds find honeyberries as tasty as blueberries – it may take them a few days to recognize the unfamiliar fruit, but without protection birds will eventually strip the shrub of fruit.
