Lowbush blueberry is a widespread species, growing from Labrador in Canada to Minnesota, south to North Carolina and Tennessee; however it’s perhaps most famously known as a plant from Maine because it grows so abundantly there that a commercial harvest from wild plants provides blueberries to food shoppers throughout North America. Fruits are considered tastier than those of highbush blueberry and their smaller size makes them ideal for baking and pancakes. We offer three varieties from Maine
‘Burgundy’ – selected by the University of Maine for good red fall foliage color. It’s a diminutive plant only growing about 12″ tall with smaller leaves than most of the Lowbush Blueberry we see growing in our area.
‘Peasley Blue’ – selected by Richard Peasley a blueberry grower from Jonesport, Maine for vigorous growth, and fruits with fine flavor, good size and juiciness. Richard states the best blueberry pies should be juicy, and ‘Peasley Blue’ is the fruit.
‘Ruby Carpet’ – selected in Michigan from seeds of a wild low-bush blueberry from Maine. Grows no higher than about 6” and readily spreads. Good crops of tasty blue-black berries, and excellent ruby fall foliage color.
