Rhododendron viscosum – Swamp Azalea

Swamp azalea grows on hummocks in wet locations in the wild but readily adapts to drier garden settings. The flowers have an intense honeysuckle-clove fragrance. Many hybrid azaleas have Swamp Azalea in their heritage – breeders have long valued the rich aroma of its flowers as well as it’s cold hardiness. Will form a thicket over time by sprouting from underground runners. In fall, the foliage takes on attractive bronze tones.
