Salix × ‘Americana’ – Hybrid Willow

Price range: $8.00 through $34.00

A hybrid between two local species, Cottony Willow (S. eriocephala) and Meadow Willow (S. petiolaris) that grows almost without any side branching, making it one of the most commonly used willows for making baskets, especially in Europe. Europeans also use it to weave fascinating, geometric living structures as shown in the photo. Stems turn a rich golden brown color towards the end of the growing season. When soaked for weaving it dries up a beautiful dark green with some brown. This is also a frequently used willow for items requiring heavier wood such as rustic furniture and trellises. Trim back every three or four years allowing the rods to develop to the desired weight. ‘Americana’ is a male plant.
