Trillium grandiflorum – Great White Trillium

Probably the most showy and best known of the Trilliums – it has a widespread distribution, from Maine to Minnesota, and extending southward in the Appalachians. It’s absent from the Catskills, perhaps because it seems to prefer circumneutral soils not the highly acidic soils typical of our mountains. Drifts of 100s of plants carpet woodland floors in the spring especially in sugar maple – beech forests. The flowers age to pink before fading and occasionally all pink forms may be found.
