Aesculus pavia – Red Buckeye

$14.00$155.00

An understory tree of southeastern forests, this is one of North America’s most colorful and ornamental small trees. Its panicles of coral red flowers are very attractive to ruby-throated hummingbirds. The palmate foliage is a lustrous dark green, often with contrasting red-tinged petioles. Avoid planting in hot, dry situations. Unlike many buckeyes this one is slow-growing (6-8” per year) but well worth the wait. Hardy to zone 5 so an appropriate choice for our valleys or intermediate elevations but not Catskill mountaintops.
