Fragaria ×ananassa ‘Allstar’ – June-bearing Strawberry

$6.00$12.00

This is just a great all around June-bearing strawberry. It was released by the University of Maryland in 1981 and continues to this day to be one of the top varieties in the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions. It ripens late mid-season, along with two other varieties we offer – ‘Dickens’ and ‘Sparkle.’ It has very large fruit with size maintained over the full course of the ripening season, along with an almost perfect strawberry shape, and, most importantly, excellent flavor. ‘Allstar’ is avigorous, productive variety with resistance to all of the major diseases of strawberries.

Description

Garden strawberries originated under cultivation in Europe from crossings of the cultivated F. chiloensis forma chiloensis from South America and F. virginiana from North America. They are grown today on all continents and occasionally escape from gardens.

  • Strawberries require 6-10 hours a day of direct sunlight.
  • They will do best in a sandy loam soil and adding some aged manure and/or compost before planting is recommended.  Mulch with chopped straw, leaves or shredded wood.
  • The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 7.
  • Strawberries need well-drained conditions so raised beds or containers are a good option.
